On Friday, December 11, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for emergency use authorization and Operation Warp Speed immediately set in motion an ambitious and challenging distribution process. By Monday, the first injections were given to high risk health care workers.
Approximately 2.9 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine were shipped. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said that 2 million more doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 5.9 million doses of the Moderna vaccine could be allocated next week, after the FDA advisory panel recommended approval of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine for emergency use. The FDA approved the emergency use authorization of the Moderna vaccine on Friday, December 18. By Sunday, the initial shipments of the Moderna vaccine were being distributed and the first shots could begin on Monday.
