The Northeast US has flattened the curve of COVID-19 cases and a phased reopening of the region’s economy is underway. With most states beginning to operate under “phase 3” guidelines, measures are being taken to prevent backsliding. As importantly, states are dedicating support for those industries and workforces where this pandemic has imposed outsized pain. But without additional, significant federal assistance the pandemic-induced recession will impose even more harm to workers and communities across the region.
Here are some of the economic recovery efforts underway in the Northeast states.
In Connecticut, Governor Lamont recently announced ConnectiCorps, a new community service program set to launch in August that will help address the growing demand on essential services provided by Connecticut’s nonprofits in the areas of food security, housing, and antipoverty assistance.
Governor Mills announced dedicating $35 million of Maine’s $1.25 billion in Coronavirus Relief Funding (CRF) provided through the CARES Act to help local and tribal governments and other qualified entities cover costs incurred as a result of COVID-19.
In Massachusetts, Governor Baker unveiled a $275 million economic recovery package to generate economic growth amidst the pandemic, which is designed to promote equity across the Commonwealth.
Governor Cuomo announced that $65 million in federal CARES Act funding is available for child care providers statewide through the New York Forward Child Care Expansion Incentive program.
In New Hampshire, Governor Sununu announced a fund that has been created to help sole proprietors. The Self Employment Livelihood Fund will offer amounts up to $50,000 to those mom-and-pop businesses that qualify.
Governor Raimondo announced creation of the COVID-19 Response Youth Summer Jobs Program to support employers who hire RI youth for summer jobs related to our COVID-19 response.
In Vermont, Governor Scott announced changes to the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program that will reduce employers’ UI tax rates and increase the maximum weekly benefit amount for UI claimants.
