Congressional Balance of Power Tightens

Democratic hopes to take over the Senate chamber have diminished. Currently, Democrats have a net gain of one seat. To win the majority, they would need at least two more. Meanwhile, a run-off election in early January for both Georgia Senate seats will determine if the Democrats control the chamber, or whether the Republicans maintain control, or if there is an even split. If the election leads to a 50-50 party split in the Senate, the Vice-President’s vote will give the majority to her party.

Most all Congressional incumbent candidates return for another term throughout the Northeast states with the exception of New York where several members either did not run for reelections, or decided to retire. Ritchie Torres replaced Jose Serrano who did not run, and Jamaal Bowman won Eliot Engels seat who was defeated in the primary. Nita Lowey announced her retirement and her seat will be filled by Mondaire Jones. As of this writing, 84% of the estimated vote total has been reported. Mail ballots are accepted through November 10 if postmarked by Election Day and will be reported in the following days and weeks.
