Programs &
Policies
Since its creation in 1976, CONEG has worked
to promote the long-term economic well-being of the Northeast. To focus its efforts
effectively, CONEG concentrates its attention on issues and activities of gubernatorial
concern that have special relevance to the region. Issues of longstanding regional concern
include transportation and economic development, energy, and the environment. Over the
years, a body of policies adopted by the Governors has provided the framework for
CONEGs public actions and programs.
Transportation / rail, energy,
environment and the economy are the current focal points for CONEG’s
regional initiatives. Major institutional and policy changes underway in the
nation are affecting the shape and operations of the Northeast’s
transportation and energy markets. These include a dynamic future for
intercity passenger rail, implementation of SAFETEA-LU, alternative energy
resources, and addressing climate change.
How these issues play out – in the region and at the federal and national
levels – will dramatically affect the region’s mobility, quality of life and
environment, and economic well being. CONEG is working with the Northeast
states to monitor these developments, assess their implications for the
region, identify opportunities for action by the states, and, where
appropriate, advocate the region’s interests.
