S. Corzine
Governor
Jon Corzine, elected in November 2005, became
Governor of New Jersey on January 17, 2006. Born in January 1947, he is a
graduate of the University of Illinois and a Marine Corp veteran. After his
duty in the Marine Corps, Governor Corzine began his career in finance at
the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago, and also worked at Bank
Ohio. In 1975, he was recruited by Goldman Sachs, named a partner in 1980,
and became chairman and chief executive officer in 1994.
In November 2000, Jon Corzine was elected to the United States Senate
where he applied his financial expertise to major economic and regulatory
issues facing New Jersey. As Senator he fought for stronger environmental
policies, introduced legislation to improve access to education and
healthcare, and led the effort in Congress to crack down on corporate abuse.
Throughout his career in both the private and public sectors, Governor
Corzine has developed a reputation as an energetic and thoughtful leader who
works cooperatively with people from all backgrounds and ideologies. He has
won bipartisan praise as an independent thinker who puts the public interest
first.
In his inaugural address, Governor Corzine pledges to seek ethics and
financial reform, property tax relief and reform, economic development, and
homeland security.
